Located 40 miles north of Boston, West Newbury is a delightful community
characterized by rolling hills with broad valleys and an unspoiled rural
charm. The Merrimack River, which flows along the northern border,
provides scenic beauty and recreational boasting. Hiking trails being
developed along the West Newbury shoreline will connect with those of
adjacent communities.
During the holiday season, families travel to West Newbury to choose and
cut a Christmas tree from one of the town's many Christmas tree farms.
The Mill Pond area, encompassing over 200 acres, provides passive
recreational activities including cross-country skiing, hiking, fishing,
horse riding rings and trails, as well as a winter carnival, fall
hayrides and other family oriented activities organized by the Mill Pond
Committee. Youth programs include soccer, baseball and softball teams,
summer children's theatre, after-school sports and arts program and a
children's story hour at the Library. A splendid playground was
constructed through the efforts of hundreds of volunteers working
together in a spirit of friendship and cooperation. The PTO and
Pentucket Activities Association through fundraising activities
supplement the programs of both the elementary and secondary schools.
Organizations for the older citizens include the Historical Society,
Garden Club and TOWNYS. The talented Volunteer Firemen's Association
Marching Band, comprised of young folks and older citizens epitomize the
cooperative spirit of community members working and playing together
that make West Newbury a special community.
